Local Colorado Drug and Alcohol Addiction Resources
For women with alcohol and drug addictions in Colorado, it can be hard to know where to turn. They are often unaware of the type of help that is available to them. For example, there are always treatment options that can help, but that is not the best solution for everyone. Some women will do much better by attending Alcoholics Anonymous or Narcotics Anonymous meetings. In addition, families can get the help they need through Al-Anon and Alateen.
This page offers information on the various addiction recovery resources that are available throughout Colorado. There are several reasons why we felt these resource pages were necessary.
Addiction Statistics in Colorado
The State of Colorado has experienced a definite increase in the number of people who abuse drugs and alcohol. The statistics very clearly indicate that this problem is more serious now than ever before. For example:
- NIDA reports that there were 578 opioid overdose deaths in Colorado in 2017.
- That is a rate of 10 deaths for every 100,000 people.
- The greatest increases were among people who died because of heroin overdoses.
- In 2010, there were only 46 heroin overdose deaths.
- By 2017, that number had increased to 224.
- During that same timeframe, the number of deaths from synthetic opioids went from 58 to 112.
- Also, prescription opioid deaths increased from 176 to 300.
- The Denver Post reported that the number of people overdosing on meth increased dramatically during 2017.
- Cocaine-related deaths are also increasing in numbers.
- In 2015, there 60 people who died from cocaine overdoses.
- By the following year, that number had gone up to 101.
- Additionally, the State of Colorado reports that 1 in 5 adults consumes alcohol excessively.
- Five people in Colorado die every day because of alcohol.
- Alcoholism is estimated to cost the state around $5 billion every single year.
Of course, the legalization of marijuana has led to more people gravitating toward the drug because it is viewed as safer. The result is that there are more people who are dependent upon it in Colorado than ever before.
Addiction Recovery for Women in Colorado
It is so important for women in Colorado to be aware of what their recovery options are. So often, women believe the lie that they are all alone in their struggles with addictions. They are taught to make their families a priority, and they believe that the only way to do that is to use.
This could not be further from the truth. There are so many ways for women to find the support they need so they can quit using.
Drug and Alcohol Detox
Some women will need to go through detox after stopping the use of drugs or alcohol. But this all depends on the type of drug they were using.
A medically supervised detox program is often a critical part in the overall recovery process. It helps people get through the worst of withdrawal, but it can also shorten the duration and intensity of their symptoms. Those who detox usually find that they feel much more prepared to remain abstinent.
Professional Addiction Treatment
Most women will find that they need to begin recovering by going through a quality rehabilitation program. They need to have the opportunity to determine what caused their addiction, and then get the right kind of treatment to help them.
For many women, co-occurring disorders like anxiety and depression are what lead them to use drugs and/or alcohol. These conditions can go undiagnosed for years while women self-medicate with substances. The right treatment program will be able to properly diagnose women and guide them toward the tools they need to be successful long-term.
Sober Living
There are some women who may not be able to go through an outpatient treatment program or even an inpatient rehab. They need more care than that, and more time to heal. For them, sober living is a great solution.
Sober living homes are facilities that house a certain number of residents who are all in treatment. They can stay for a very long period of time while they get the help they need to get their lives back on track.
Alcoholics Anonymous
Alcoholics Anonymous is an organization that offers support group meetings on an outpatient basis. They teach the 12-Steps of recovery, which can be very helpful for a woman who needs peer support to stop using.
AA meetings in Colorado are free to attend, and there is also no cost for membership. The only requirement is for the individual to have a desire to stop drinking.
Narcotics Anonymous
Narcotics Anonymous is similar to AA, but they focus mainly on providing peer support to drug addicts. Even so, there are many alcoholics who attend NA meetings because they prefer them over AA.
Like AA, NA meetings are free to attend and there is no cost for membership. They are places where people can feel free to share their experiences with substance abuse and also lend their support to others.
Support for Families: Al-Anon and Alateen Meetings
Al-Anon is an organization that offers support group meetings for families. Alateen is an extension of their program that is geared toward helping teenagers and young people.
Meetings are held on a weekly basis, and they can be so encouraging for families. They get to learn more about what addiction is, and they can also build on their coping skills.
